The Shelby 427 is a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held annually at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada. The inaugural race was first held in 1998. For several years, the race was sponsored by United Auto Workers and DaimlerChrysler. From its inception through 2008, the race was run at a distance of 400 miles (640 km). The race is unique for its championship belt offered instead of a traditional trophy, owing to the city’s “fight capital of the world” image. In 2008, the buyout of Chrysler from Daimler-Benz by Cerberus Capital Management necessitated the name change to UAW-Dodge 400 for 2008. LVMS is receiving sponsorship from Carroll Shelby International for 2009. The race has been extended by 27 miles (43 km) as part of the sponsorship, with the race taking the name of one of Shelby’s automobiles, the 427 Cobra.
